A-2 / The firm

Fifty years under the same family.

ABD Engineering was founded in 1974 as a two person structural practice. Civil and site engineering was brought in house in 1983, and mechanical and electrical followed in 1996, completing the four discipline practice the firm operates today.

A second generation of the family joined in 2008. Both generations currently work on projects, and the firm has remained privately held by the family since founding, with no outside ownership.

Project records are retained from 1974 forward, including calculations, drawing sets, and field reports. For buildings ABD has designed previously, that archive is available when the building is renovated, expanded, or sold.

Practice notes
  • 01Discipline coordination is handled internally. Drawing sets are issued as one package rather than assembled from separate consultants.
  • 02Site visits are included in the scope of assessment, renovation, and repair work.
  • 03Construction phase services cover submittal review, RFI response, and field observation reports.
  • 04The engineer sealing the drawings is assigned to the project from proposal through closeout.
  • 05Licensure varies by state. Registrations for a specific jurisdiction are confirmed before proposal.
A-3 / Services

Scope by discipline.

S

Structural engineering

Design and analysis of steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and wood framing, from a single beam replacement through a complete building frame. A significant share of the structural work is assessment and repair of buildings already in service, including buildings originally designed by others.

  • Foundation and footing design
  • Gravity and lateral framing
  • Seismic and wind analysis
  • Additions and vertical expansion
  • Condition assessment
  • Repair and strengthening design
  • Shoring and temporary works review
  • Peer review
C

Civil and site engineering

Site work from the property line to the foundation, prepared for review by the authority having jurisdiction. Scope typically includes the drainage design and the agency coordination required to move it through approval.

  • Site layout and grading
  • Stormwater management
  • Erosion and sediment control
  • Water, sewer, and utility design
  • Pavement and parking design
  • Drainage studies
  • Entitlement and permit support
  • Agency coordination
M

Mechanical engineering

HVAC and plumbing design sized to the building's occupancy and operating profile. Work includes new systems, phased equipment replacement in occupied buildings, and surveys of existing mechanical systems approaching end of service life.

  • HVAC system design
  • Heating and cooling load calculations
  • Ventilation and indoor air quality
  • Plumbing and piping design
  • Equipment selection and replacement
  • Energy code compliance
  • System condition surveys
  • Commissioning support
E

Electrical engineering

Power, lighting, and life safety design coordinated against the mechanical set. A large portion of this work is service and distribution upgrades in older buildings, where existing conditions govern the design.

  • Power distribution design
  • Service and panel upgrades
  • Interior and site lighting
  • Fire alarm and life safety
  • Emergency and standby power
  • Load studies
  • Low voltage coordination
  • Arc flash and safety review
